Anatel reports 54 million mobile phones - and climbing

19 Jul 2004

The Brazilian telecoms regulator says there were more than 54 million mobile phones in use in the country at the end of June, representing a year-on-year rise of 42%. Anatel reported 1.6 million net additions during the month of June as cellular penetration soared to 30% from 21% a year ago and 17% in mid-2002. The current number of mobile lines in use has already eclipsed Anatel’s full-year target for 2004 by 2.92% driven by the popularity of pre-pay phones, which currently account for 79% of all mobile connections.
