Orascom reaches landmark

13 Jul 2004

Algeria’s biggest mobile operator Orascom Telecom Algerie has announced the signing of its two millionth subscriber, just over two years after launching services under the Djezzy GSM brand in the capital Algiers. The operator, which last week trumpeted the launch of GPRS, yesterday also announced the introduction of commercial EDGE services – the first on the African continent. Orascom Telecom claims to have invested USD1.16 billion in its network and services to date, and by the end of 2003 had coverage of 72% of the population, including all 48 regions (Wilayas), via a network of 900 base stations, five switching centres and three IN platforms (in Algiers, Oran and Constantine), with infrastructure supplied by Siemens and Alcatel. Djezzy boasts a far more extensive network than its rival Mobilis and even with a new operator due to enter the market in mid-2004, it is confident of retaining its dominance.
