mmO2 forms 50:50 virtual mobile joint venture with Tchibo

UK-based mobile operator mmO2 has teamed up with Germany’s number one coffee shop chain Tchibo to create a new ‘virtual’ mobile operator to target the low revenue pre-paid market. The equal joint venture agreement will make use of Tchibo’s 850 retail outlets and free up mmO2 to focus on developing its core market of higher-spending post-paid accounts. mmO2 inked a similar deal with Tesco in the UK in September last year, and has since signed up around 250,000 customers. It is understood the German initiative will be modelled along similar lines whereby Tchibo will purchase wholesale voice minutes from the cellco and market its own branded service throughout its network of stores.
