Kenyan mobile operator Safaricom has said that it plans to add 125 new base stations in Nairobi and a further 200 across the rest of the country under the KES8 billion (USD100 million) capital expenditure programme it is planning by the end of the year. The company, which currently has around 1.7 million customers, recently launched GPRS with initial download speeds of 53.4kbps to its post-paid client base under the banner Safaricom Mobile Office. It is hoping to increase its subscriber base to 2.5 million by early 2005.
