MTS reveals growth numbers

Mobile TeleSystems (MTS), the largest cellco in Russia and Ukraine, has said that its consolidated subscriber base grew by more than 100% to 22.78 million in the year to 30 June 2004. Of the total, 18.14 million were connected to the operator’s Russian networks, up from 9.32 million, with 6.12 million situated in and around Moscow (4.13 million). During June alone MTS added 1.49 million new customers, 215,000 of which came via its purchase of the 50% it did not already own in Primtelefon, which operates in the Far East of Russia and Siberia. In addition to its Russian and Ukrainian operations, MTS also has a 49% stake in Belarussian operator Mobile TeleSystems LLC, which claimed 745,000 customers in mid-2004, up from 575,000 the year before.
