Mobile market reaches 47 million users: revenues predicted to hit USD9 billion in 2004

7 Jul 2004

On 31 May 2004 the number of people with a mobile phone in Russia broke the 47 million barrier, to give a national cellular penetration rate of around 33%. According to Pyramid Research, revenues from mobile services are predicted to reach USD9 billion this year, more than 1.5 times that forecast for fixed line services in the country. The growth of wireless services is being driven partly by investment in regional expansion projects, although more money is needed to improve coverage, and the problems of declining ARPU and lower call volumes continue to be a cause for concern.
