PTA denies Indian telco licence

6 Jul 2004

The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) has opted not to shortlist a consortium bidding for a long-distance licence on the basis that it has Indian backing. Century Telecom, a joint venture between domestic ISP CyberNet and Indian international telco VSNL, failed to make the cut onto a final list of 19 companies interested in acquiring licences in the newly deregulated Pakistani market. According to a spokesperson from the PTA, security concerns precluded Indian companies from the running; despite an improvement in recent times, India and Pakistan have been at loggerheads for years over the disputed Himalayan region of Kashmir.
