US to sign satellite agreement with EU

25 Jun 2004

The US and the European Union (EU) have agreed to sign a contract on satellite technology, clearing the way for Europe to develop its own independent presence in space. The two sides say they have reached a full agreement with each other, setting out the technical standards to be used by the Galileo and GPS operating systems. The deal will enable the two networks to use a common ‘baseline’ signal so that they can work together to improve performance, rather than competing with each other.
