Cable operator unveils big telecoms investment plans

Mexican cable TV operator Megacable has said it plans to invest USD80 million upgrading its infrastructure with voice telephony equipment. The operator, which according to BNamericas currently has around 450,000 TV and 115,000 internet subscribers across 34 cities, has said it is not looking for a partner from the traditional telecoms industry, despite this week’s announcement by Mexico’s Communications and Transport Ministry that cable TV operators can only begin offering telephony services in conjunction with telephone companies. Megacable president Enrique Yamuni has reacted angrily to the ruling, saying ‘We don’t agree with this. Its our network, our investments, the clients are ours’.
