22 Jun 2004

The forthcoming award of Saudi Arabia’s much-coveted second mobile licence has attracted a new bidder in the form of Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal, who is reported to have teamed up with Telefónica Moviles. Alwaleed is said to have held a meeting with a delegation from the Spanish mobile giant with a view to tabling an official offer for the concession on 26 June. Eleven other consortia will table their bids on the same day, among them Vodafone of the UK, Deutsche Telekom (Germany), Bouygues (France), Orascom (Egypt), Maxis (Malaysia), Etisalat (UAE) and MTN (South Africa). The winner is due to be announced in August.
