Brazilian mobile operator Vivo, a joint venture between Portugal Telecom and Spain’s Telefónica, has said that it is in talks with equipment manufacturers Vitelcom (Spain), Gradiente and Evadin (both Brazil) over the purchase of five million mobile handsets at a cost of USD375 million. The operator, which recently signed a deal to buy 1.25 million handsets from China’s ZTE for USD100 million, has said the new supply agreement is geared towards meeting the anticipated subscriber demand over the Christmas 2005 period. Leading equipment suppliers Nokia, Motorola, LG and Samsung were also initially consulted over the deal.
