Scottish parliament makes broadband pledge to region

3 Jun 2004

Scotland’s enterprise minister Jim Wallace has promised to deliver ‘affordable’ broadband services to every community in the country, no matter how remote, by the end of 2005. The announcement, which lays down a time-table for near 100% coverage, follows just days after Orkney, Shetland and the outer Hebrides were connected to broadband services. The Scottish executive met its target of 70% coverage in January and in April BT said it planned to accelerate its deployment programme to upgrade all but the smallest 399 local exchanges by the summer of 2005.
