Panasonic parent to shift phone production

3 Jun 2004

Matsushita Electric Industrial (MEI), the parent company of electronics manufacturer Panasonic, has announced plans to consolidate its mobile phone production in Japan, closing one of its major factories in the process. MEI has proposed shutting down its Hanamaki plant in Iwante Prefecture, which manufactures handsets as well as automobile components, and shifting production to its Shizuoka plant. It says it intends to move Hanamaki employees to Sizuoka and has not announced any planned reductions in staff. The migration is tentatively scheduled to take place in October this year.
