Sony to shift focus to multimedia devices

2 Jun 2004

Tokyo-based Sony Corp has announced plans to shift its focus away from personal digital assistants (PDAs) to multimedia devices, claiming that the market is geared more towards gaming platforms and wireless communications devices such as the PlayStation Portable (PSP) game console and ‘smartphones’. The company said that shipments of handheld computers fell 5.3% last year as people switched to mobile phones offering similar functions. It said it will start selling its PSP game console in Japan by the end of 2004.
