Second GSM operator to enter mobile market

17 May 2004

Saudi Telecom Company (STC), the sole mobile operator in Saudi Arabia, is preparing for the onset of competition. The regulator has short-listed eleven companies – including major regional operators Etisalat, Orascom and MTC – to bid for the new GSM licence; the tender is expected to be completed in July. In a bid to hold on to its market position, STC has launched a range of new products and services. At the end of April 2004 it claimed around 7.5 million mobile users.
