Regulator head fired over BTC sale delays

14 May 2004

The Bulgarian government has replaced the head of a state telecommunications commission over allegations that he has been attempting to stall the privatisation of the Bulgarian Telecommunications Company (BTC). Georgi Alexandrov has been removed from the Communications Regulation Commission (CRC) to be replaced by Gergana Serbova, former chief secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications. Much of the recent delays in the sale of a 65% stake in BTC to Vienna-based Viva Ventures have been attributed to Alexandrov’s refusal to bundle a GSM licence with the operator despite the concession originally being part of the agreement.
