Anatel unbundling decision welcomed by operators

14 May 2004

Brazilian regulator Anatel has announced an initiative to fix prices for line sharing as part of a plan to open up the local loop to competition. The move has been welcomed by the country’s fixed line operators, which have found it hard to establish a footing in the market. Anatel plans to implement the new regulation immediately, and has set a price of BRL15.42 (USD4.92) for providing broadband services over the last mile. It has given incumbent operators Brasil Telecom, Telesp and Telemar 30 days to publish plans for line sharing and full unbundling.
