Ghana Telecommunication (GT) has embarked on an ambitious plan to install a national network of payphones based on GSM technology to reach areas of the country not served by its landline infrastructure. The operator has said that the GSM payphones can be accessed with normal payphone cards and that the tariffs charged will be the same as those for the landline payphones it operates. Once an area served by the new system has been covered by the company’s fixed line infrastructure, GT is planning to move the GSM payphones to areas without telecommunication facilities. 300 of the new payphones have been installed so far, with a further 1,000 due to be added to the network by the end of the year.
