NITEL commits to rural network and prepares to launch pre-pay

7 May 2004

National PTO Nigerian Telecommunications Limited (NITEL) has announced plans to build a countrywide fibre optic transmission infrastructure for rural telephony. The telco has set aside between NGN15 billion and NGN20 billion (USD115-153 million) for the project, with build out due to begin immediately.

NITEL has also confirmed that its long-awaited pre-paid telephony cards are due in shops ‘in a couple of weeks’. The telco has finally taken delivery of 700 million cards after delays in getting them through customs. It hopes that the pre-pay system will help reduce the problem of non-paying private customers; NITEL claims it is owed about NGN13 billion in unpaid charges from consumers.
