Hutchison confirms LG as preferred 3G vendor

7 May 2004

Hong-Kong based conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa has confirmed that South Korea’s LG Electronics will be the handset vendor of choice for its faltering third-generation (3G) mobile service. LG’s first videophone, designed exclusively for Hutchison, is set to be launched in Italian stores today. Hutchison has been looking for a new handset supplier after technical glitches and supply problems with previous suppliers NEC and Motorola saw the operator fall well short of its end-2003 subscriber targets; it has since added handsets from Finland’s Nokia to its roster. LG is now the fifth largest handset supplier worldwide, having sold around 8.75 million units in the first three months of 2004, a rise of 56% on the corresponding period of 2003.
