TTCL launches pre-paid fixed line service; hopes for 80,000 customers

5 May 2004

The Tanzania Telecommunications Company (TTCL) has launched a pre-paid system for fixed lines in Dar es Salaam and hopes the new service will attract 80,000 subscribers within the first six months of operations. The launch comes at a difficult time for the national PTO. It is embroiled in a dispute with the telecoms licensing authority over its failure to meet network rollout obligations agreed by strategic investor MSI/Detecon of the Netherlands. The Dutch backer promised to raise the number of fixed lines from 180,000 to 800,000 in five years, but has added barely 40,000 to take the total to 220,000 – of which only 136,000 are active.
