Mobiles take over from fixed lines

5 May 2004

A survey by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has found that Africa has become the first continent to have more mobile users than fixed line customers. At the end of 2003 there were more than 52 million mobile subscribers in the continent, 13 million of which were added during that year, compared to around 24 million landline customers. The report revealed that the continent’s mobile phone usage has increased at an annual rate of 65%, double the global average.
