Nigerian regulator warned by telco

30 Apr 2004

The Nigerian mobile operator MTN has warned officials at the country’s telecoms regulator, the National Communications Commission (NCC), that they could be accused of contempt of court if rival GSM operators go ahead and introduce new interconnection charges on the NCC’s instructions. The NCC wants to implement a new interconnect regime, but MTN has challenged the ruling in court, and says that the current set of fees should remain in service until the dispute is settled. The regulator, meanwhile, says that it has not been informed by the court that it cannot introduce the new tariffs while the legal case continues.
