Ericsson and Cisco forge wireline alliance

28 Apr 2004

Swedish and US equipment manufacturers Ericsson and Cisco Systems have signed a multi-year strategic alliance to offer joint solutions for the wireline communications market. Under the agreement the partners will provide carrier class IP-based solutions addressing traditional telephony and new multimedia services, which will be built around Ericsson’s ENGINE softswitch portfolio and Cisco’s core routing products. A broadband access offering will be based on Public Ethernet over DSL, using Ericsson’s IP-based DSL access multiplexer (DSLAM), as well as its IP Service Engine and Cisco Systems’ Ethernet Access Solutions and Ethernet Switches. Ericsson has said that several other major telcos have expressed an interest in joining the venture, including Spain’s Telefónica and Australian operator Telstra.
