State to investigate VNPT tenders

19 Apr 2004

Vietnam’s State Inspectorate, a government agency tasked with overseeing the performance of state-run companies, is to launch a probe into government tenders worth millions of dollars at the country’s national PTO, Vietnam Post and Telecommunications Corp (VNPT). Although the inspectorate has declined to comment on the nature of the investigation, according to local press sources the tender contracts under scrutiny are estimated to be worth close to USD230 million. State-owned former monopoly VNPT is the country’s dominant telecoms carrier, reporting revenues of USD1.6 billion in 2003. Since 2000 the Vietnamese government has been opening up the sector and encouraging competition from new domestic players.
