SK Telecom launches world's first DMB satellite

5 Apr 2004

SK Telecom claims to have launched the world’s first satellite for mobile multimedia broadcasting (DMB), designed to provide services to Korea and Japan. SK said that the MBSat satellite – nicknamed ‘Hanbyol’ (or ‘big star’ in Korean) – was launched from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida on 13 March 2004. DMB services are due to be rolled out in Japan by July after local company MBCO obtained a preliminary business licence from the government last year; it is confident of obtaining a full services concession by May. Services are likely to be launched in Korea shortly, following a revision of the country’s Broadcasting Law last month. The Korean government is currently in the process of awarding DMB licences and authorising broadcast stations.
