Six licences up for grabs before year end

30 Mar 2004

The Mexican government is preparing to auction new spectrum for mobile and radio trunking services in the 800MHz and 1900MHz bands, according to local press reports. The two tenders will be open to all players, including current operators Telcel and Nextel Mexico, and is expected to begin next month and be concluded by the end of the year. The auctions follow the state’s previously announced sales of a satellite licence and three fixed line concessions, all of which are also due for tender this year. The six licences are expected to raise a combined MXP800 million (USD75 million) for the government coffers.
