30 Mar 2004

The Lebanese Telecommunications Ministry yesterday received nine bids for a tender to manage the country’s two mobile networks, after short listing 15 companies to take part in the process. The regulator has not yet revealed how many of the nine will progress to the next round. The tender was launched in February after an attempt to privatise the two networks failed in January. The companies which entered the bids were Orange, Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM), Telenor of Norway, Detecon International, Orascom Telecom of Egypt, Ireland’s DigiCek, Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC) of Kuwait, Hong Kong mobile carrier Sunday Communications and ATG of the US.
