Alcatel and Intel sign agreement to develop WiMAX

29 Mar 2004

Paris-based equipment manufacturer Alcatel has teamed up with chip maker Intel to jointly develop and promote WiMAX, a new broadband wireless access technology promoting the use of a global standard certifying interoperability of both products and technologies. The emerging platform offers high speed internet availability in areas where access to the landline is not feasible or economically viable, and the two companies believe it will grow to rival short-range wireless access alternatives such as Wi-Fi. WiMAX can blanket cover a 30-mile radius with broadband transmission capability and is drawing interest from carriers in countries as diverse as the UK and India, where the need for high speed connections in rural areas is great.
