Azercell’s 2004 privatisation likely to be shelved

The proposed sale of a 51% stake in state-owned mobile phone operator Azercell Telecom in 2004 has been shelved by the Telecommunications Ministry. Although no reason was given, Azerbaijan’s Telecoms Minister Ali Abbasov said it was ‘unlikely’ to proceed for the foreseeable future. Azercell had 946,540 subscribers in mid-February 2004.
