Econet completes upgrade - targets new sign ups

12 Mar 2004

Econet Wireless Zimbabwe (Econet) says it has completed a project to upgrade its pre-paid platform and hopes the improvement will enable it to significantly boost its subscriber base from the 160,000 subscribers it has now. The news will no doubt be welcome to Zimbabweans waiting for a connection. Since 2000 a shortage of foreign currency has hindered the country’s three cellular operators from continuing their network expansion programmes. The situation was exacerbated by the regulator, the Post and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) imposing ‘sub-optimal’ tariffs on the operators.
