Group apply for ‘.mob’ domain

11 Mar 2004

A number of hardware and software manufacturers have joined forces with wireless service providers and handset manufacturers to apply for a top level internet domain specifically for the mobile internet arena, of the same rank as the .com and .org suffixes. Companies including Microsoft, Nokia, Vodafone, 3, the GSM Association, Samsung and Sun Microsystems, will act together as registrars for the ‘.mob’ address. If successful, the move will open up millions of addresses for mobile use. The exact suffix has yet to be agreed on and ICANN, the body that administers the naming process could take up to six months to approve the convention.
