India’s mobile market breaks 31 million barrier

8 Mar 2004

The number of people signing up to mobile services in India exceeded 1.63 million in February, taking the total number of subscribers in the world’s fastest growing market to 31.4 million. Of the total, 24.65 million are GSM users, thanks to 1.28 million net additions over the course of the month. Meanwhile, India’s CDMA operators reported 345,951 new subscriber activations, with Reliance leading the pack with 6.51 million CDMA accounts. Low call rates are driving growth in a market that is estimated to number more than 100 million users by 2005.
