Change in regulatory landscape to precede broadband licence auction

8 Mar 2004

Regulator Anatel will introduce a new set of regulations in the second half of the year aimed at removing the monopoly in the Brazilian local telephony market, some six years after privatisation of the sector. Anatel will actively promote full unbundling, line share and bit stream models in a bid to open up both the voice and data segments of the market. The new regulations are being put into place before Anatel auctions a number of broadband services licences in the third quarter of the year.
