Amércia Móvil’s Enitel takeover thwarted by Telcor

3 Mar 2004

Nicaragua’s telecoms watchdog Telcor is reported to be ready to bar Mexico-based América Móvil from launching a full takeover of its domestic fixed line operator Enitel, in an attempt to protect competition in the wireless sector. In late February América Móvil moved to purchase the 40% stake in Enitel held by Swedish/Honduran consortium Megatel, to add to the 49% holding it acquired in January. However, local press sources claim that Telcor is contemplating putting obstacles in the way by threatening to stop the Mexican-based operation from merging its Nicaraguan mobile unit Alo PCS with Enitel’s mobile subsidiary.
