IBM .v. Microsoft - let battle commence

2 Mar 2004

IBM is poised to announce details of a major USD1 billion initiative to coerce software developers into using and developing applications for its own software technology, as it turns up the heat on Microsoft in the battle for control of the market, according to the Financial Times. Big Blue is reportedly hoping to convince development teams to translate their applications to operate on IBM platforms, such as Java and Linux, by offering enticements such as co-marketing deals, free software, low-cost development tools and access to large customer accounts. IBM exited the corporate applications market in 1999, but is once again keen to win over software developers to promote its applications.
