CCK launches local telephony initiative

27 Feb 2004

The Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) yesterday launched a strategy to licence local telephony operators, in a bid to boost access to the PSTN. Since 2001 the CCK has licensed two local loop operators, with a number of other applications currently in train. The CCK estimates that demand for a fixed line connection currently stands at around 1.6 million households, while the fixed line network has a capacity of 500,000.
