One more try for mobile privatisation

19 Feb 2004

The Lebanese government is to once again try and auction contracts for the management of the country’s two existing GSM mobile operators, LibanCell and Cellis, for a four-year term. Last month the government voted to postpone the planned privatisation of the country’s mobile sector after failing to attract suitable bids in auction. The lack of outside interest prompted the government to begin the whole auction process once more, this time handing control of the tender to the Telecommunications Ministry, rather than the Higher Council for Privatisation (HCP), which had overseen all previous auctions.
