Chinese vendors boast record exports and domestic market growth in 2003

China exported a record 95.23 million mobile handsets in 2003, up 50% year-on-year and worth a total USD7.37 billion, according to the Ministry of Commerce; the majority of phones went to the US (33.3%), Hong Kong (18.4%) and Germany (13.8%). In China’s domestic market local vendors, including Ningbo Bird, TCL and Konka, claimed a 53% share of annual handset sales, up from just 5% in 1999.
