Indian mobile operator Bharti Cellular was yesterday awarded new operating concessions for five telecoms circles, giving it coverage of 21 regions, the third-largest coverage area behind rivals BSNL and Reliance. Bharti, which operates under the AirTel brandname, received licences covering West Bengal, Andaman, Nicobar, Orissa, Bihar, UP East, J&K, and has become the first operator to be awarded concessions covering Jammu and Kashmir. The cellco says it will need to invest INR6 billion to launch its services in the new circles.
