Ericsson has won a USD400 million contract from Bharti Tele-Ventures for the provision of managed services and network infrastructure, which will include the upgrade of its GSM network both in terms of coverage and services. Under the terms of the deal Ericsson will continuously deliver equipment and services based on Bharti’s capacity requirements. At the end of January 2004 Bharti claimed a total of 6.45 million customers, of which 5.86 million were connected to its wireless network, giving it a 25.1% share of India’s total subscriber base. The remaining 587,872 customers are connected to its fixed line network. The company complements its local wireline operations with national and international long-distance services.
