EC asks Madrid to ease 3G terms

10 Feb 2004

The European Commission (EC) has called into question the validity of some of the conditions attached to the Spanish 3G licences. Spanish newspaper Cinco Dias has reported that the EC’s Enterprise and Information Society Commissioner Erkki Liikanen has written a letter to Spanish Minister for Science and Technology, Juan Costa Climent, to withdraw the requirements relating to job creation and EUR3 billion investment in research and development. The EC has also demanded that the government cancel the UMTS rollout guarantees imposed on the operators.
