Vimpelcom loses out to MTS

Russian mobile operator MTS has jumped ahead of its main rival Vimpelcom in terms of new customer additions for the first time in seven months, adding 605,500 new users in January 2004, 124,000 of which were in the Moscow area. Vimpelcom added 536,000 subscribers to its network, 106,640 in Moscow, while the nation’s third operator MegaFon added 121,100, 54,560 of which were in Moscow. At the end of the month, however, Vimpelcom was still the largest cellco in Russia, claiming a market share of 49%, while MTS had a 43.1% share and MegaFon took 7.4%; other smaller operators accounted for the remaining 0.5%.
