Two million 3G users for DoCoMo

29 Jan 2004

Japanese cellco NTT DoCoMo has revealed that it has signed up two million users to its 3G service, FOMA, meeting its target two months ahead of schedule. The operator said that subscriptions have been boosted by new, lighter handsets and better service coverage, and expects its new 900i series phone to increase growth further.

In a separate matter, DoCoMo has agreed to waive its right to be consulted on any merger talks held by AT&T Wireless, in which it holds a 16% stake. By agreeing to the waiver, the operator is permitted to enter a bid to acquire the American cellco itself, although this is deemed unlikely, as it has limited experience in managing a non-Japanese company.
