Vodacom breaks ten million barrier

Pan-African cellular operator Vodacom said it had 10.2 million subscribers across its networks in South Africa, Congo, Lesotho, Mozambique and Tanzania at the end of 2003, a rise of 6.2% from the end of September. The company’s principal operation, Vodacom South Africa, boasted 8.9 million customers, of which 7.6 million were pre-paid. Average revenue per user (ARPU) in South Africa rose from ZAR179 to ZAR184 per month during the quarter.
