23 Jan 2004

The Latin American arm of US telco BellSouth has reported net income of USD62 million for the fourth quarter of 2003, a rise of 59% over the corresponding period of 2002, thanks mainly to strong customer growth at its operations in Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Venezuela. The company said its wireless subscriber base grew by 345,000 during the three-month period to just under 9.7 million, while fixed line customers increased by more than 60% to 390,000. During the quarter BellSouth completed the installation of a CDMA overlay across nine of the ten Latin American mobile networks under its control, over which it plans to introduce 1xRTT data services.
