Ho Ho NO! 3's Ozzie Merry Christmas a big flop

16 Jan 2004

Hutchison Telecom, which owns and operates Australia’s sole 3G network under the banner 3, said its Christmas sales in Oz failed to come close to meeting its expectations, with the firm’s 57 retail outlets reporting having reached only 24% of budget by 20 December. In typical bombastic fashion Hutchison launched a last-minute ‘30% off’ sale on 19 December which ran to 11 January, leading to some more interest, however the group concedes that its performance had fallen well below its targets. 3 blamed the sales shortfall on the recent Melbourne heatwave and a lack of choice for 3G handsets. In the wake of disappointing reports around the world for 3, it is rumoured that Hutchison’s parent Hutchison Whampoa is to sell Hong Kong’s second largest fixed line business to an affiliate for USD700 million, to help fund its ailing global 3G enterprises.
