Adult content ‘screens’ to be introduced across UK networks

16 Jan 2004

The UK’s six mobile operators have all agreed to adopt a new set of industry guidelines geared towards preventing minors from accessing pornographic content and images on their mobile phones. The development follows the raising of concerns in the national press about the potential ease with which underage users can access ‘adult content’ via the internet-enabled mobile handsets which comprise the bulk of terminals sold on the UK networks of Vodafone, Orange, O2, T-Mobile, H3G and Virgin Mobile. Under the guidelines, new technologies which will prevent ‘unauthorised’ phones from accessing content deemed worthy of an adult rating will be installed across all of the country’s mobile networks by the end of 2004; as well as pornographic images, adult content will include gambling services and unsuitable games and film trailers.
