Orange pushes to (walkie) talk

14 Jan 2004

Orange is preparing to launch one of Europe’s first ‘push to talk’ services, enabling users to engage in ‘walkie-talkie’ style communications via their mobile handset. The service, called Talk Now, is similar to those currently on offer in the US by cellcos Verizon and Nextel, and allows users to call and message other users without having to dial up. Talk Now is due to launch in France and the UK in 2Q2004, with a further ten countries to follow by the end of the year. Other European operators are likely to follow Orange’s lead, although the region’s dominant use of GSM technology poses a number of technological challenges to the viability of push to talk services, most notably time lag problems that do not occur with packet-based mobile technology.
