13 Jan 2004

ScanCom, the Cypriot wireless operator owned by Beirut-based holding company Investcom, has signed a contract with Alcatel for the supply of GSM, GPRS and EDGE infrastructure. Under the terms of the contract Alcatel will supply ScanCom with a complete radio and mobile core network as well as an intelligent network platform for value added services including MMS and voicemail. The new network is scheduled to become operational by 1 May 2004. Scancom Cyprus won its 20-year licence in December 2003, bidding CYP12.75 million for the concession, beating Cosmote Telecommunications Cyprus, a subsidiary of the Greek mobile operator Cosmote and Atlantic Crest, a Monaco-based telecommunication group.
